Augmented and Virtual Reality Laboratory (AVR Lab)
XR for Cultural Heritage
Museo Accessibile della Ceramica di Cutrofiano
One of AVR Lab's main objectives in the field of cultural heritage is accessibility.
The project carried out for the Cutrofiano Ceramics Museum sought to involve the local community by focusing on a sense of community. During the content creation process, several local ceramists were invited to share their opinions on the exhibits and knowledge and curiosities about their art.
As part of the project, a digital catalogue of some of the museum's most important pieces was developed. This catalogue works with sensors, allowing users to navigate without touching the screen. In addition, a tactile catalogue was created which allows visually impaired people to explore relief drawings and understand the contents through Braille translations. In addition, a tactile path was created with panels equipped with relief outlines, Braille translations and QR codes or NFC tags offering access to videos in which interpreters translate the content into Italian Sign Language (LIS). Some of the selected works (such as the museum's symbol) have been reproduced in 3D and printed, allowing exploration through touch.
Finally, a virtual reality (VR) application was developed that reconstructs a ceramist's studio, where users can shape clay and create ceramics with their own hands, guided by the voice of the ceramist who accompanies them during the experience.
