The research activities of the Augmented and Virtual Reality Laboratory (AVR Lab) are mainly focused on eXtended Reality (XR) in Medicine and Surgery, Cultural Heritage and Education. The eXtended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term representing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR).

The Laboratory, supported by University of Salento, is the organizer of the International Conference on eXtended Reality (XR Salento), an event dedicated to the eXtended Reality (XR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The event provides a unique opportunity for discussion and debate among scientists, engineers, educators, students and allows them to connect with fellow entrepreneurs and companies operating in the same sector, thus experiencing applications of these emerging technologies. The first edition of XR Salento was in 2022 and it is an evolution of previous editions of the International Conference on Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Computer Graphics (Salento AVR), which had united the AR/VR community since 2014.

AVR Lab is a member of the European Association for eXtended Reality (EuroXR) and it takes part in the organization of the Euro XR Summer School.

The Laboratory also participates in the International Conference on Metrology for eXtended Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Neural Engineering - IEEE MetroXRAINE.

AVR Lab is involved in the design and development of advanced human-machine interfaces.
